The following are descriptions of the available scholarships from the San Angelo Area Foundation:
LaRue D. Allison Scholarship Fund
This fund was established by Steve and Pollyanna Stephens in honor of LaRue D. Allison. Scholarships will be awarded to students who have graduated from a high school within the area served by the Foundation and who will be a full-time student at an accredited college or university.
Clay Antilley Memorial Scholarship Fund
Established by friends and family in memory of Clay who passed away in a tragic accident in 2007, this fund will award a scholarship to a Robert Lee youth active in local agricultural related activities like FFA and 4-H.
Mike and Donna Anderson ASU Baseball Scholarship Fund
An endowed scholarship to be awarded annually to an ASU student, or newly admitted student, who is a graduate of a high school located within the 17 counties served by the San Angelo Area Foundation who will play baseball for ASU.
Armstrong Backus Scholarship
A perpetual scholarship, established by the partners of local accounting firm Armstrong Backus and Co., to be awarded to an ASU graduate student with a minimum of 120 hours and a grade point average of no less than 3.0 and who is majoring in accounting with the intention of becoming a CPA.
Travis Scott Armstrong Scholarship Fund
In memory of their son Travis, Bill and Susan Armstrong established this scholarship fund in 2003. Travis was born in San Angelo and resided there most of his life. He later enrolled at the Marine Military Academy, an all-boys boarding school affiliated with the Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps located in Harlingen, Texas. While at MMA, Travis was elected Cadet of the Month, Cadet of the Year for Delta Company and received the honor of Most Valuable Player for baseball. He attained the rank of Cadet Staff Sergeant. Travis returned to San Angelo for his senior year at Central High School. He excelled in athletics while a member of the Bobcat football and swimming teams, graduating in May 1999. Travis was a member of the First United Methodist Church where he served as an usher with his dad and brother for many years. He was well-known for his faith and service to others. He volunteered for Meals for the Elderly, West Texas Boys Ranch and Wesley United Methodist Church Soup Kitchen. Travis enlisted in the Army in 2002. He was stationed at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, where he was training to be a medical corpsman with the 232D Medical Battalion. This scholarship will be awarded each year to a graduating senior from the following counties: Tom Green, Crockett, Sutton, Kimble, Mason, Llano, San Saba, Menard, Schleicher, Reagan, Irion, Concho, McCulloch, Runnels, Coke, Sterling, and Glasscock and is a current or past resident of the West Texas Boys Ranch in San Angelo, Texas.
ASU Baseball Scholarship Fund
Fund created by supporters of the new ASU mens baseball program in order to provide scholarships for this new program.
ASU Fame Endowed Scholarship Fund
The ASU Fame Endowed Scholarship Fund was established to enhance the Angelo State University Friends of Art and Music Educators organization. This fund will award scholarships to art and music students admitted or are attending Angelo State University.
ASU FAME - Mayer Anderson Memorial Scholarship Fund
This is a sub-fund from the ASU Fame Endowed Scholarship Fund, established by Norm and Doris Rousselot along with friends and family in memory of their grandson Mayer Anderson, which will award scholarships to art and music students who are admitted to or attending Angelo State University.
Margaret Stites Memorial ASU FAME Scholarship Fund
Established by Margaret Mallard in memory of Margaret Stites, a visual arts professor at Angelo State University. Scholarship provides assistance to ASU students with more than 30 credit hours who major in the field of visual arts.
Jack & Nina Brewer Scholarship Fund
Jack and Nina Brewer established this scholarship in 2003. Soon after was the unfortunate death of Jack. Jack was born in Stilwell, Oklahoma in 1927, where he attended public school. After graduation he volunteered for the Navy and served until the end of World War II. Following his discharge he played football at Oklahoma Eastern A&M and graduated from Northeastern State at Tahlequah. He then moved to Borger, Texas to start his coaching career, which lasted for 36 years. In Borger, Jack married Nina Starkey, who was also a coach-teacher. They had no children but had many young friends they claimed as their own. Jack moved up the ladder to college level of Howard Payne University where he coached for three years. HPU won the Conference Title in 1954. Jack then moved to La Vega High School of Waco as head coach from 1956-1958 and was named Central Texas Coach of the Year in 1957. Jack and Nina moved to Odessa, Ector County ISD where Jack continued his service as a coach and teacher. Jack earned many honors while in Odessa which included: Texas Hall of Honor, Top of Texas Hall of Fame, board of directors for the High School Athletic Directors Association, National Athletic Association Board member, Outstanding Alumnus of his hometown of Stilwell, Top of Texas Football Magazine Hall of Fame, Whos Who in Texas Education, Whos Who in American Education, Whos Who in International Education, award for outstanding service to the youth of Odessa, Outstanding Leadership award. There are many more awards, too numerous to mention. Jack retired and moved to Robert Lee in 1986. Jack and Nina loved to fish and spent much time at Lake Spence and Lake Ivie. The Brewers spent time in church and loved doing civic work. At the time of Jacks death, he served on the Upper Colorado River Authority Board of Directors. He was appointed by then-Gov. George W. Bush. Because of his illness (myelodysplasia-leukemia), Jack was unable to serve on the many other boards from which he participated. This scholarship will be awarded to students of Robert Lee High School attending the First United Methodist Church of Robert Lee. Scholarships will be given out once a year to graduating senior(s).
Ted Bruton Memorial Scholarship Fund
A memorial scholarship which was created by friends and family of Ted Bruton which will award a scholarship to a qualifying student accepted as a student at Texas A & M. The focus of this fund is to assist an A&M student who is accepted into A&M, but may not be in the top tier of their class and needs assistance to attend Texas A&M.
Bill Carrico Music Scholarship Fund
Created by former students of Bill Carrico along with friends, in memory of the former band director from Pecos, Texas. Scholarships awarded to music students from the Pecos area of West Texas.
Central High Class of 1965 Scholarship Fund
This fund was established by the Central High Class of 1965, and awards a $500 scholarship to a graduating senior from San Angelo Central High School who plans to attend any accredited college or university. To be considered for the Central High Class of 1965 Scholarship, the student must demonstrate the following:
- Outstanding achievement in academics and leadership
- Participation in school and community activities
- Self-discipline, hard work and determination
- Need for financial assistance will be given preference
X B Cox Jr. Family Scholarship Fund
Established in 2006 by the X B Cox Jr. Family to provide scholarships for graduate students pursuing a graduate degree in the medical field with preference given to the study of cancer research.
Daniel & Lois Duderstadt Arnold Scholarship Fund
The Daniel and Lois Duderstadt Arnold Scholarship Fund was established in 2004 by Yvonne Meyer in memory of her mother, Lois. Lois was born on July 12, 1912 in Kerr County. She was married to the late Daniel Arnold for 63 years, until his death in 1996. Lois attended Reservation School in Kerr County and graduated from San Marcos Academy in San Marcos, Texas. A member of Calvary Episcopal Church since 1934, Lois was active as Altar Guild directress, Sunday school teacher and in various activities in the Episcopal Diocese of West Texas. She was among the founders of Menards Community Vacation Bible School. While her daughters were in school, she also was active in school and after-school activities. A few years ago, she was received into the Catholic communion.
To be considered for this scholarship, the student must demonstrate the following:
- Participation in school and community organizations and activities;
- Self-discipline, hard work and determination;
- A desire to pursue a career in nursing.
- Preference will be given to a Menard community student.
1st Community Federal Credit Union/Mark Nikolauk Memorial Scholarship Fund
Scholarship created by Bill Nikolauk and family and by 1st Community Federal Credit Union in memory of Bills brother, Mark. Awarded to students who have graduated from a high school within the area served by the Foundation and who will be a full-time student at Angelo State University.
Florence Nightingale Endowed Scholarship Fund
The Florence Nightingale Endowed Scholarship Fund was established by the Florence Nightingale Nursing Educational Foundation to benefit students residing within the 17 counties served by the San Angelo Area Foundation. To be considered for this scholarship, the student must demonstrate the following:
- Participation in school and community organizations and activities
- Self-discipline, hard work and determination
- A desire to pursue a career in nursing
Flynn Scholarship Fund
The Flynn Scholarship Fund was established by Billy and Claudine Flynn to benefit students who are or were residents of the Cherokee Childrens Home in Cherokee, Texas. Second preference will be given to students who are regular attendees of a church of Christ church in the Concho Valley area of West Texas. To be considered for this scholarship, the student must have demonstrated the following:
- Outstanding achievement in academics and leadership
- Participation in school, community and church organizations and activities
- Self-discipline, hard work and determination
- Need for financial assistance will be given preference
Flynn Scholarship Fund II
An Endowed scholarship fund established by Billy and Claudine Flynn specifically to provide educational grants to current or former residents of four orphanages in the west Texas area and New Mexico affiliated with the church of Christ.
Hale Family Scholarship Fund
Established by family members in memory of parents and grandparents who helped settle West Texas in the early 1900's. This scholarship is available to any student from the Concho Valley, for up to two years, who will be attending Angelo State University or Texas Tech University.
The James Hindman ASU Baseball Scholarship Fund
This endowed scholarship fund, instituted by Clark Pfluger and Ken Lyons, was in honor of the current president of the university, Dr. James Hindman. The student athlete selected for this scholarship will be a Concho Valley area student enrolled in the baseball program at ASU.
Karen Kay Huddleston Scholarship Fund
Leanorah and Lloyd Hendry wanted to honor the memory of their daughter Karen with this scholarship fund. Karen resided in San Angelo where she worked at Verizon until March of 2003. Karen became a member of Assembly 100, Order of the Rainbow for Girls, in 1958 and held twelve stations in this Assembly. She was presented the Grand Cross of Color, the highest award received by a Rainbow Girl, by the Supreme Assembly International Order of the Rainbow Girls in recognition of distinguished service in 1963. She was the first San Angelo Rainbow Girl to receive a state honor. The rainbow was her lifelong inspiration. Karen loved the arts and used her artistic talents to give great pleasure to many friends, family, organizations and philanthropies. This scholarship will award a graduating senior(s) from San Angelo Central High School or San Angelo Lake View High School to major in the arts and attend Angelo State University or Texas A&M University.
Bryan and Velma Hunt Scholarship Fund
This endowed scholarship fund was established in accordance with the wishes of Velma Hunt through the Bryan Hunt Scholarship Trust created December 21, 1973. Bryan and Velma Hunt were long-time ranchers of this community. This scholarship will award at least $600 per semester to a student who graduated from a high school from the area of Texas which produces sheep and goat as determined by the Texas Sheep and Goat Raisers Association and will be or is attending any accredited college, university or vocational trade school. Preference will be given to students majoring in agricultural sciences.
Dub and June Izzard Scholarship Fund
This fund was established by former mayor of San Angelo, Rudy Izzard, to honor his parents Dub and June Izzard. This scholarship is awarded to a student athlete from the Concho Valley who would play football for Angelo State University.
Junior Writers Competition Scholarship Fund
The Junior Writers Competition Committee hosts a competition in which the Committee solicits young persons to submit examples of their writing. The Committee will judge submissions and will determine the appropriate college scholarship recipients from the aforementioned competition held each spring.
The Gloria Kerbow Memorial Scholarship Fund
This endowed scholarship fund was established in memory of Gloria Kerbow of Sutton County. The scholarship will go to a full time student from the Concho Valley with preference given to a student whose major field of study is mental health. The applicant will be reviewed by the Endowment Committee of the First Methodist Church of Sonora.
Cleve Kirkland Cornerstone Scholarship Fund
The Cleve Kirkland Cornerstone Scholarship Fund was established by Dr. Peter Chang, along with family and friends, in memory of Cleve, a prominent doctor in San Angelo. The fund was established to benefit graduating students of Cornerstone Christian School located in Tom Green County, Texas.
Kara Linthicum Memorial Scholarship Fund
The Kara Linthicum Memorial Scholarship Fund was established by Lad and Sue Linthicum in memory of their granddaughter, Kara. To be eligible for the Kara Linthicum Memorial Scholarship, the student must be a graduate of a high school located within the 17 counties served by the San Angelo Area Foundation and have been a resident student of said high school for three consecutive semesters beginning the junior year. To be considered for the scholarship, the student must have demonstrated the following:
- Outstanding achievement in academics and leadership
- Participation in school, community organizations and activities
- Self-discipline, hard work and determination
- Preference will be given to a female arts major
L. P. Bloodworth Dee Ora Masonic Lodge #715 Scholarship Fund
Established in memory of their fellow Masonic brother, L. P. Bloodworth, by Sonora local Masons for scholarships to selected graduates from Sonora High School.
Robert and Mary Payne Massie Memorial Scholarship Fund
Established in memory of Robert and Mary Payne Massie, scholarships may be awarded to selected graduates from Ozona, Irion County, Eldorado, and Sonora High Schools, who will be attending Angelo State University.
Ralph and Bobby Lou Mayer Scholarship Fund
This scholarship is to be awarded to a high school student who is a graduate within the area served by the San Angelo Area Foundation who is a student athlete admitted or attending Angelo State University.
John Mark McLaughlin Scholarship Fund
Endowed fund created by the trustees of the San Angelo Health Foundation to honor John Mark McLaughlin for his service as an original trustee of the San Angelo Health Foundation.
Raymond Torres Meza II Memorial Scholarship Fund
The Raymond Torres Meza II Memorial Scholarship Fund was established to honor the memory of Raymond T. Meza II by his parents Raymond and Norma Meza along with their family. Raymond was a resident of San Angelo where he was active in many sports such as baseball, football and basketball. Raymond was a role model for the youth of San Angelo. He attended Trinity Lutheran Church and traveled to New Zealand, Guatemala, Canada, the Philippines, Singapore, Russia and Mexico with the Christians Mens Network to work in a youth center. Raymond has a three year old daughter, Amanda Nicole, who brought him love and joy. This scholarship will be awarded each year to a graduating senior(s) from San Angelo Central High School that will attend Angelo State University.
Rhett Miller Memorial Scholarship Fund
The Rhett Miller Memorial Scholarship was established in 1995 by the Stribling family in memory of Rhett Miller, a 1988 graduate of Central High School, who died in 1991. The scholarship, in the amount of $2,000, is given in installments of $500 over the first four full semesters of college. To be eligible for the scholarship the applicant must be a spring graduate of Central High School and must have been a student at Central High School for three consecutive semesters beginning the junior year. To be considered for the Rhett Miller Scholarship, the student must demonstrate:
- Outstanding achievement in academics and leadership
- Participation in school and community organizations and activities
- Self-discipline, hard work, and determination
- Need for financial assistance
Rhett Miller Soccer Scholarship Fund
In 2005, the San Angelo Area Foundation assumed the management of the Rhett Miller Soccer Scholarship Fund that was established in 1992 by Pierce and Betty Miller in memory of their son, Rhett Miller (photo above), a 1988 graduate of Central High School who died in 1991. While at Central, Rhett was Vice President of his class for three years, Class Favorite nominee for three years, Varsity cheerleader for two years and a member of the National Honor Society, but soccer was always his first love. As an accomplished goal keeper, Rhett qualified at both regional and state levels of competition. To be eligible for this scholarship, a male student must be a graduating senior of San Angelo Central High School Bobcat Soccer Team. The scholarship, in the amount of $2,800, is given in installments of $350 over eight full semesters of college.
Austin C. Millspaugh Scholarship Fund
This fund was established in memory of Austin Millspaugh, who passed away in 2004, by board members of Texas Bank along with friends and his family. This scholarship will award a grant to a student from a qualified college (with at least 60 hours) from the West Texas area, who is pursuing a degree within the field of agricultural sciences.
Jo Anne and Charles E. Powell Academic Excellence Scholarship Fund
This scholarship is to be awarded to a high school student who is a graduate within the 17 county area served by the San Angelo Area Foundation. To be considered for the scholarship, the student must have demonstrated the following:
- Outstanding achievement in academics and leadership
- Participation in school, church and community activities
- Self-discipline, hard work, and determination
- Need for financial assistance will be given preference
Tanner Puckett Memorial Scholarship Fund
Tanner Puckett was a special fourth grader when he passed away from a heart disease, while waiting for a heart transplant. Friends and classmates of Tanner created this fund to award scholarships to a student(s) in the class year 2015, which is the year Tanner would have graduated high school.
Dennis and Ginger Reed Scholarship Fund
Scholarship fund provides assistance to area youth, with preference given to students actively involved in a Church of Christ church and who will attend Angelo State University.
Ozelle & Morris Reese Scholarship Fund
The Ozelle and Morris Reese Memorial Scholarship was established in 1995 by their son Morris Reese, Jr. The fund awards a $500 scholarship to a graduating senior from a San Angelo high school. The scholarship alternates annually between graduates of Central and Lake View High Schools. To be considered for the Ozelle and Morris Reese Memorial Scholarship, the student must demonstrate the following:
- Participation in school and community organizations and activities
- Self-discipline, hard work and determination
- Need for financial assistance
Robinson School Scholarship Fund
The Robinson School Scholarship Fund was established by Eira Virginia Jones in memory of her grandparents, Eira Mae and Guy Robinson. The Robinson School is located near Strawn, Texas in Palo Pinto County and was open from 1937 to 1943, established by Virginia Joness grandfather, Guy Robinson. This scholarship will award annually at least $500 per semester to a graduating senior(s) from Strawn High School. To be considered for the scholarship, the student must have demonstrated the following:
- Outstanding achievement in academics and leadership
- Participation in school and community activities
- Self-discipline, hard work and determination
- Need for financial assistance will be given preference
Jim Rose Memorial Scholarship Fund
The Jim Rose Memorial Scholarship Fund was established by Frank and Joan Rose, in memory of Franks brother, Jim. Scholarships from this fund will go towards a student athlete admitted to or attending Angelo State University.
San Angelo Area Foundation Community Scholarship Fund
This is a scholarship fund established within the San Angelo Area Foundation which receives contributions from the San Angelo community and surrounding areas. It will award a $500 scholarship annually to students residing within the 17 counties served by the San Angelo Area Foundation.
San Angelo A&M University Mothers Club Scholarship Fund
This fund was established by the A&M University Mothers Club in San Angelo for a student who has been admitted to or attending Texas A&M University. To be eligible for the scholarship, the student must be a graduate of a high school located with the 17 county area served by the San Angelo Area Foundation.
San Angelo A&M Scholarship Fund
This endowed scholarship fund was established by the San Angelo A&M Club for a student who has been accepted to or is currently attending Texas A&M University. Applicants are reviewed by the San Angelo A&M Club.
San Angelo Rotary Scholarship Fund
This fund was established by members of the San Angelo Rotary Club and exemplifies the Rotarian credo of Service above self. To be eligible for this scholarship a student must be a graduate of any Tom Green County, Texas high school who is planning to attend any accredited college or university. Applicants are reviewed by the Scholarship Committee of the Rotary Club of San Angelo.
Fannie DeHoyos Sanchez Memorial Scholarship Fund
Endowed scholarship established by the family of Fannie DeHoyos Sanchez to honor her memory. Fannie was a faithful servant to our Lord Jesus Christ. She devoted twenty-four years of her life as a secretary in the Catholic Church of Ozona, Texas. Fannie continues to give to others even after her death through this scholarship fund. A scholarship will be awarded each year in her name to a graduate of Ozona High School who will be attending an accredited college or university.
Mary T. Simpson Scholarship Fund
This fund was established from the estate of Mary T. Simpson to provide assistance to graduates of San Angelo Central High School, San Angelo Lakeview High School and Zapata High School. This scholarship is based on academic achievement and is eligible for any applicant, regardless of college choice. The award is renewable for up to four years, subject to certain academic requirements.
San Angelo Schools Scholarship Fund
Established in 2003, at the San Angelo Area Foundation, the San Angelo Schools Scholarship Fund will award multiple scholarships to a graduating senior(s) from San Angelo Central High School and San Angelo Lake View High School. Implemented in spring, 2002, this scholarship provides scholarships in the amount of $500 each.
Stephens Scholarship Funds for ASU Athletics
F.L. and Pollyanna Stephens created two endowed scholarship funds to enhance the athletic programs at ASU. Both funds will assist the athletic department of ASU with its student athlete recruitment. One of the funds focuses the awards on students from the Concho Valley, while the second is available to any ASU student athlete.
Ralph & Elene Wilson Scholarship Fund
This scholarship was established by Ralph and Elene Wilson focused on helping senior college students at Angelo State University finish their undergraduate degree.
Louis and Eddie Mae Woodward Scholarship Fund
Louis and Eddie Mae were ranchers in West Texas and their children have established this fund in their memory to award scholarships to students coming from an agricultural and rural background, from west Texas attending a Texas or New Mexico college or university.
Woolworth Scholarship Fund
Scholarship fund established by May and Elizabeth Woolworth in 1972. May Woolworth was a SAISD science teacher during the first half of the 20th century. Following her wishes, this fund may award scholarships annually to students nominated by a SAISD science teacher, who will graduate in the top 10% of their class, who have taken science classes their junior and senior years, and will be majoring in the sciences in college.
