San Angelo Area Foundation

Annual Report - 2005

Guidelines for Grant Seekers

As a community foundation, the San Angelo Area Foundation does not limit its discretionary grant making to a particular field or area of interest. Rather, it seeks to support the entire range of human needs in the San Angelo area. Because the Foundation is new and its resources are limited, the Directors must make judgments based on relative need and potential impact. Preference is given to applications that:

  • Enable charitable agencies to perform essential services that reduce costs, increase efficiency, build self-sufficiency, and strengthen internal management capabilities;
  • Demonstrate strong volunteer involvement, broad community support, and significantly strengthen the capacity of existing institutions to reach a broader segment of the community;
  • Are developed in consultation with other agencies and planning groups who promote coordination, cooperation, and sharing among organizations, thus eliminating duplication of services.

The Foundation’s grant review process is structured to encourage ideas and proposals from organizations representing broad and diverse interests for San Angelo and the surrounding area. The grant review process is done by our volunteer grants committee, supported by professional staff. The Foundation uses an approach which simplifies the grant request process, by asking potential grant seekers to provide a letter of intent (executive summary) in lieu of completing an entire grant request. The process for grant consideration is as follows:

  • Organizations must be a 501(c)3 tax exempt organization, a school, or governmental sub-division.
  • A letter of intent (executive summary) should be sent to the Foundation by September 1st of each year to be considered for the Foundation annual grant making sequence.
  • Based on information provided by the letter of intent, the Grants Committee of the Foundation determines which organizations it asks to submit a formal grant request.
  • Grants are awarded by December of each year.
